ASUNCIÓN
Asunción is the capital of Paraguay and the biggest city in the country. It is built on hills situated on top of the east coast of the Paraguay River. The majority of sight seeing attractions is found inside the area known as "Microcentro" (Microcenter). There are few colonial remains and few attempts at dividing the zones of the city.
Therefore, Asunción has transformed itself to a jumble of new and eclectic buildings and establishments of illegal occupants along the riverbanks and railroad.
One of the most historical buildings is the Government Palace, located near the port and in front of Casa Viola, which is one of the few surviving colonial buildings and is now a museum. There are also excellent parks such as Jardín Botánico and the Zoo. The Museo del Barro is the first modern art museum of the city. The movie theaters located in the main shopping areas of the city are also very modern. Additionally, there is theater and live music in the numerous cultural centers.
