ITAIPÚ DAM
The central hydroelectric plant of Itaipú, defined as one of the 7 wonders of modern engineering not only has changed the river region between Brazil and Paraguay but also the customs and the economy of the area known as "Tres Fronteras" (Three Frontiers) between Ciudad del Este and Foz de Iguazú.
Constructed by Paraguayans and Brazilians, Itaipú is today a very important tourist attraction. Only during the last 2 decades, more than 9 million tourists of 164 nationalities have visited Itaipu, which is the biggest hydroelectric plant in the world. Free tours are offered daily to hundreds of people who wish to know more details.
The reservoir has approximately 29 million cubic meters of water. According to technical studies, the amount of cement used in its construction would be enough to make all the buildings in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The history of the construction and operation of the dam is documented by a 30-minute film that is shown to visitors upon entrance.
