ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION
The country is divided into 17 provinces, in addition to the District Capital of Asuncion. There is a Governor at the head of every district who is elected by universal suffrage by citizens residing in the respective provinces. Elections coincide with the general elections. The Governor's term of office is 5 years.
The 17 provinces are Alto Paraná, Alto Paraguay, Amambay, Boquerón, Caaguazú, Caazapá, Canindeyú, Central, Concepción, Cordillera, Guairá, Itapúa, Misiones, Ñeembucu, Parguarí, San Pedro and Villa Hayes.
Each province is divided into municipals and districts, of which enjoy administrative and normative political autonomy for the management of its interests and independence in the collection and investment of its resources within the boundaries and laws of the Constitution.
